Send the NHL and NHLPA a clear message.
We need to make it clear that we intend to financially punish the NHL and NHLPA for failing to reach a deal and do so in proportion to the amount the NHL season cancelled. That’s the purpose of this site … to specify this financial punishment, to calculate it in proportion to the duration of the lockout, and ultimately to help fans actually carry through with this threat after play resumes. Not only should this exert pressure to end the current lockout, it should help both sides know better next time so this site doesn’t have to be reactivated for Lockout 2019. Will it work? Well, when the MLB lost half of the 1994 season to a strike, it was hit incredibly hard and it took years for baseball to get fans to come back to the game. Since then, MLB has learned its lesson and there have been no major labor disputes since then.
Time for the NHL/NHLPA to get the same message ... fans, take the NHL Lockout Pledge:
The Lockout Pledge
I, a fan of the NHL, demand that the NHL and NHLPA find a way to compromise, negotiate a CBA immediately, and resume NHL play ASAP. I understand that the primary issue in this dispute is money. Since a significant percentage of that money comes from us, the fans, I would like to let you know that that the pool of money you are fighting over will shrink the longer this dispute lasts and both parties will lose more money by further delay than they would by compromising on a few percentages in their share of hockey-related revenues in negotiations. Specifically, I pledge that, starting Oct. 11 2012, for every day of this NHL regular season that is cancelled, I will reduce my normal spending on the NHL by at least $10, and for every month the dispute lasts I will maintain this reduction in spending for an additional year.
(The financial terms of the pledge will be calculated and posted on NHLFanBoycott.com for as long as the terms of the pledge are in effect.)
Pledge implementation examples:
• If all Oct games were cancelled, there would be 20 days of the season and 1 month lost. The pledge would mean that I would reduce my spending on the NHL by at least $200 for only the current season.
• If all games through November were also cancelled, there would be 50 days and 2 months lost. The pledge would mean that I would reduce my spending on the NHL by at least $500 for the current season and 1 additional season.
• In the worst case scenario, in which the season is cancelled, this pledge would mean that I would reduce my spending on the NHL by at least $1840 for the current season and 6 additional seasons.
Take the pledge?
